IV Fluids and Dehydration in Dogs

DV Medical Supply, Inc., furnishes health care providers with pharmaceutical products such as medications and intravenous (IV) fluids. Veterinarians, a class of client served by DV Medical Supply, rely on IV fluids to address dehydration in dogs and other animals.

When veterinarians assess a dog’s health, one symptom they may look for is dehydration, which can result from many underlying illnesses or injuries. For example, dogs with kidney disease are at risk of dehydration.

Dogs with differing degrees of dehydration present with diverse symptoms. In mild cases of 5 percent to 6 percent dehydration, animals can exhibit skin elasticity loss. In severe dehydration of 12 percent to 15 percent, dogs can go into shock and may be in danger of death without immediate treatment.

To treat dehydration, veterinarians may prescribe IV fluids that act quickly to introduce nourishing liquids directly into the bloodstream. IV fluids may contain different ingredients depending on patient needs. The IV often includes saline, vitamins, and/or sugar.

Hydroxyzine - A Medication with Antihistamine and Sedative Properties

A wholesale distributor of medical products and pharmaceutical supplies, DV Medical Supply provides easy ordering and reliable delivery from personal account representatives located in Southern California. Pharmaceuticals provided by DV Medical Supply include 10, 25, and 50 milligram doses of hydroxyzine.

Hydroxyzine decreases activity in the central nervous system and serves as an antihistamine, which helps relieve itching and hives by interfering with the body’s production of a chemical called histamine. Physicians prescribe the medication to adults and children for a variety of uses. It can relieve itching caused by allergic reactions, and its sedative properties are often utilized by surgeons as a general anesthesia prior to surgery. In addition, psychiatrists may prescribe it alone or alongside other medication as a treatment for anxiety.

Side effects associated with hydroxyzine range from dizziness and drowsiness to dry mouth and constipation. Individuals taking the medication can take steps to alleviate milder symptoms, such as sucking on sugar-free hard candies or drinking extra water to relieve dry mouth. However, physician intervention or discontinuation of the medication may be required if users experience more severe symptoms, such as hallucinations, tremors, difficulty urinating, or severe mood or mental changes.

ChildFund International’s Women’s Giving Circle

Now overseen by Dr. Stephanie Ferguson, a veterinary professional who took majority ownership of the company in 2005, DV Medical Supply distributes wholesale medical products and generic pharmaceuticals. Founded in 1978, the company has developed a sterling reputation in the health care industry. DV Medical Supply supports a number of charities, including ChildFund International, a nonprofit focused on ensuring that children are provided with environments that offer them the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The Women’s Giving Circle is one of the organization's many initiatives. Members give an annual contribution to the project, which is distributed to programs that have demonstrated the highest impact on children’s lives. Since 2015, funds from the circle have been channeled towards ChildFund’s Early Child Development program, with the aim of offering the children it supports the strongest possible start in life.

Women's Giving Circle members are offered the opportunity to network with fellow members, in addition to gaining access to a yearly web seminar conducted by Anne Goddard, one of the leaders of the nonprofit. On average, members of the circle donate approximately $1,000, with each also earning special recognition in ChildFund’s annual records and a number of other publications.
